Vikings II: Harald Harðraði, Someone To Love Or Hate

Harald Harðraði has been called the Last Viking, but perhaps the “Last Famous Viking” would be more accurate. The half-brother of Saint Olaf was far from being holy, but he was wholly determined to become rich. His adventures and misadventures took him eastward unlike Ragnar, Rollo and Gunderedo, who were led southward to France and Spain. In addition, he aspired to the highest levels of power – kingship – and of more than one country.

  • The introduction of Christianity was not smooth among the Nordics.
  • Olaf became a saint in Norway, Harðraði an adventurer in the East.
  • Making a fortune and bathing in the Jordan–that was for Harðraði.
  • King Harold Godwineson took his troops on a forced march.
  • The break after a hard day’s battle was costly.
  • Could you read this if two kings and a bastard had fought differently?

This talk and Q&A are planned to last a maximum of 60-90 minutes for an audience of at least seven, but certainly many more are welcome. We will be in the Parish Life Center beginning 4:00 PM on July 24, 2024. Should you have any questions, you may reach Alan at frenchda2@mac.com. Please sign up!
